Just a Few Questions

Hello everyone, my friends and I recently heard about larping, and we all thought it would be a blast. Alliance LARP seems to be the best one in Minnesota, so I'm trying to organize a group of us to go to the August 14-16 event, but I have a few questions first.

1. Obviously, the rulebook and handbook combined are over 200 pages long. What would be the best way to teach my friends all the rules and whatnot? I was thinking about having a few training sessions over the summer leading up to the event, but it definitely feels a little overwhelming.

2. I'm just curious as to how many PC's usually attend the summer events... like are we talking 20 or more like 100?

3. One of my friends that would like to go larping with us is only 15. When we go in August, he will be only 2 months away from turning 16. He is very tall for his age and could easily pass for a 17 or 18 year old. He really does not want to be a page but rather fully participate in the festivities, so I'm wondering if there are ever exceptions for the age limit. If so, who would we need to contact?

If you could help answer any of these questions it would be much appreciated. :)

Hey Xandrog,

Welcome to Alliance LARP!

I'm Peter, one of the Rules Marshals in the SoMN chapter. SoMN just had an event this weekend so there might be a delay in responses from others while our staff and players recover.

1. Obviously, the rulebook and handbook combined are over 200 pages long. What would be the best way to teach my friends all the rules and whatnot? I was thinking about having a few training sessions over the summer leading up to the event, but it definitely feels a little overwhelming.

It takes two or three events to really get a handle on the rules, so don't worry about being an expert right away. Keep it simple and focus on basics, such as safety rules (HOLD!), hit points, bleeding/death counts, etc. As a low level PC, you're not going to have a lot of advanced skills, so you have time to learn those later.

If there is a group of new players, we will often take them all aside before Game On on the first night and do a half hour of Alliance LARP 101 training. I have personally led this training many times and it seems to work pretty well. After that, feel free to ask questions during the event as things happen. Everyone was completely new at some point (even me and now I'm a Marshal!).

2. I'm just curious as to how many PC's usually attend the summer events... like are we talking 20 or more like 100?

More in the 40-60 range. You will see the exact Pre-Registration and Registration lists on this board in the weeks prior to the event. Those are usually accurate to within 3-5 players, give or take.

This is a strict legal age restriction for our insurance. Unfortunately, we cannot make exceptions based on physical size. He would also need a parent/guardian on site during the game. Also, anyone under 18 must have the proper paperwork signed BEFORE playing the event. You can email info@mnalliance.com to obtain those forms.

If you have any other questions, please ask!

Welcome again and hope to meet you all soon!

Hey there,

I am still recovering from our recent event this last weekend and will be able to provide a bit more information later, but for now, I can suggest you have a look at the document linked below. It's a shorter guide to our game designed to get new players a basic understanding of the rules without having to dig through the entirety of the excessive and convoluted fluff of the main Alliance rulebook (believe me, I think it's long and tedious, too). It was written by a player in the Seattle chapter, but the rules are nation-wide so that shouldn't really matter, but if there are any Seattle-specific things mentioned in there (which I think there were at the very end), just ignore those and look for similar Southern Minnesota information instead.

Also, whereabouts in Minnesota are you? You might be close to others players that could help you learn the system prior to showing up to your first event. :)

I look forward to seeing you soon,
~ Alexander
