Just a Few Questions

Hello everyone, my friends and I recently heard about larping, and we all thought it would be a blast. Alliance LARP seems to be the best one in Minnesota, so I'm trying to organize a group of us to go to the August 14-16 event, but I have a few questions first.

1. Obviously, the rulebook and handbook combined are over 200 pages long. What would be the best way to teach my friends all the rules and whatnot? I was thinking about having a few training sessions over the summer leading up to the event, but it definitely feels a little overwhelming.

2. I'm just curious as to how many PC's usually attend the summer events... like are we talking 20 or more like 100?

3. One of my friends that would like to go larping with us is only 15. When we go in August, he will be only 2 months away from turning 16. He is very tall for his age and could easily pass for a 17 or 18 year old. He really does not want to be a page but rather fully participate in the festivities, so I'm wondering if there are ever exceptions for the age limit. If so, who would we need to contact?

If you could help answer any of these questions it would be much appreciated. :)

Training sessions are pretty much the best way to drill the rule book. It is still best if your friends read the crunchy parts, too (how combat works, how effects work, etc.), but drilling helps a lot.

I can only speak for HQ, but games there usually average 40-60 PCs. Highs have reached ~100 at times and lows occasionally dip to about 20.

Short answer: There are no exceptions to page rules. You have to understand that the page rules are primarily based on insurance. If a chapter breaks the page rules, they could lose their insurance and never be able to replace it. And that is basically the end of the chapter. To be honest, most chapters aren't interested in players that want to break rules. A player looking to break one rule is more likely to break other rules and in a game where the honor system is primarily used to enforce rules, that is a problem.

If it helps any on the last point, I have paged full events before (due to injury) and still had a great time. You still get rewarded (XP / Goblin Stamps / etc.) as if you were playing normally and it is a great way to really learn the game, since it is much easier to observe rules interactions when you are one step removed from them.

Hey Xandrog,

Welcome to Alliance LARP!

I'm Peter, one of the Rules Marshals in the SoMN chapter. I see you cross-posted this to the SoMN section, so I'll answer your questions there.
