Keeping color in hair

Durnic

Knight
For my newest character I have been putting a bit of white hair coloring into my hair and beard. I find that I have to touch it up every 8 to 10 hours because it fades. Is there anything like barrier spray for hair? I really would prefer to not be consistently touching up my hair coloring.

As a kid, I tried doing something similar to what you do with Durnic with spraypaint. It lasted until my dad wire-brushed my head with paint thinner, so if you're looking for durable color, that might be a good bet, but... maybe not worth the clean-up.

Barring that, what are you currently using to color your hair?

You should ask Ryan what he uses for Luke, it seems to hold well.

Also, try dropping into Costume Avenue in downtown Beaverton, near the Farmers Market, this weekend, the owner there is very knowledgeable, lets you sample stage makeups, works a lot with the theater community and occasionally sets up tables at other LARPs.

you can mix the color in with a Final Sealer and then apply. Supposedly AquaNet is pretty good also.

I am using the Ben Nye white hair dye (http://camerareadycosmetics.com/products/ben-nye-liquid-hair-color-usa-only.html) which I did, indeed, buy from Costume Avenue in Beaverton. :D

Is this like Barrier Spray? Forgive the naivete but I have exactly 0 experience with make up until this character.

Final Seal is a barrier spray, Aqua Net is cheaper and is what you use to get that 80's helmet hair look.

What are you using for your base color? The Nye or Mehron hair makeup really is great... I can keep silver in my hair a full 24 hours with it... only need to reapply after I shower.

And yes, a basic hairspray after will help a lot too.

I vouch for the Mehron hair white. I play an older character and use this stuff pretty liberally. I also strongly recommend investing in John Frieda's Frizz-Ease "Moisture Barrier" hairspray and adding that on top of this. The hairspray is meant to keep humidity from causing hair-frizz, and I find it works well in a water/sweat proofing sense because of that. I rarely need to re-apply the hair white + spray combo unless I shower.

Yes, precisely that! I stand by it. You get a little of the Aquanet helmet-yness, but it tends to un-helmet pretty quickly.
