Let's go play AL this weekend!

I alternate between:
"Going to a SoMN (or ChiTown) event this weekend."
"I'll be playing an Alliance game this weekend."
And my personal favorite,
"We're gonna go into the woods and beat up our friends with foam & duck tape covered plumbing supplies!"

Wait, we're supposed to use foam when we're in SoMN? Thought that was an LCO Chicago rule... no wonder the NPCs run from me. :P

Most of the players I know refer to it as "Going to Alliance," unless talking to Another Alliance player they may refer to it as "Going to the Seattle/Oregon game."
I do hear the long time players refer to it as "Nero," it's just up to the fresher players to correct them/whack them with a boffer.

I have kicked myself enough that I now refer to it as Alliance instead of NERO. But, I don't say Alliance much anymore because (as noted) it doesn't roll off the tongue and kind of doesn't sound right when I say it aloud. So, I generally say I am going LARPing.

I still say NERO to fellow Alliance players. If I am talking to some one who doesn't know the Alliance, I tell them that I am going to play the Alliance formerly known as NERO.

Dropping any reference to NERO might hurt us a bit because there is history there (WoW you play the Grandfather of larps).

"hay im heading up to the woods to beet on some friend want to join me?"
"hay going to alliance this weekend want to come?"
"hay there is an alliance event this weekend want to go?"
"off to my monthly addiction see you."
"off to target practic!"
"heading up to a larp for the weekend want to try it out?"
"i play this game is called alliance its a larp...."

alliance dose not roll of the tung but its a good name i use it a lot but there are many ways to say it and some times one is better then the other

i also advertise the game at con's i have had hundreds of conversation with gamer's and random people (mostly gamers)about what larp-ing is, but i cant tell you how many times the word nero taints my attempt to get a new player, this is a conservative estimation but a bout 30% or more of the conversations i have go like this....

me: hay have you ever thought a bout larp-ing?
random gamer: ya i have...
me:cool i play in this group called alliance
random gamer: ho you mean nero
me:no um i mean alliance well um it was along time a go part of nero but the group split we got the rules they got the name.
random gamer: so your playing nero.
me:no, the rules have evolved with us since then and, nero's gone backwards with their rules...
random gamer: ok so its still nero
me:no.... do you what to hear about it
random gamer: no i have a friend that played nero 10 years a go i know about the game...
me *walks away thinking... its not nero... i said that....*

and about 50% go like this "not interested"... end...

the other 19 out of 20 % end up "o that sounds cool, tell me more... nod "a-ha... fake responses walks away....

1% i that sounds like a blast i want to try it but i leave far a way.....

and some where in there at 0.001 % "cool ya ill see you at the next event want to hang out this week and teach me how to play?"

We used to be NERO, and then we split off and became the NERO Alliance. When we finally decided to stop using NERO, the most obvious choice for a name for consistency was Alliance.

But it doesn't flow off the tongue as well as NERO does. And people still say "I'm playing NERO this weekend" when they mean Alliance. Sometimes Heidi and I even do that.

So what do we do? Should people say "I'm playing Al this weekend"? Is there something else we can say? :|

(In all seriousness, I don't think there is an answer to this!)

Alliance works fine. Al sounds like the next thing that's happening will be Oliver Songbringer singing "White and Nerdy".

I usually prefer to leave vegatables out of things, no one likes a beet down  :D

Now I wanna do a NERO-recover video: "You can call me AL". Think Paul Simon and Chevy Chase are still available?

Chevy's in between seasons of Community... as for Paul Simon, I know he just performed in England (courtesy of Wikipedia)...

Get Steve Martin on banjo and you're golden

It took me a while to get used to saying it, but I am going to go play Alliance this weekend. Specifically at the Catskills chapter. It's going to be grand, you should come play Alliance this weekend with us.

Also, I'm going to play Alliance at HQ the weekend after. That's going to be really fun, too. The Alliance playing I mean.

Now if only we can crush those Imperial dogs once and for all!

Or come play in Chicago this weekend. We've got 3 PC owners so far! Almost the whole midwest will be represented!

just run a booth for Alliance at a major comic book convention... it burns it into your memory.. the whole elevator speech... that and the G4 segment on repeat for 3 days... is everyone statted? does everyone have treasure?

also.. there are more people interested in kids events than anything else in the known world. and you know what? I bet it wouldn't hurt to indoctrinate them while they are young. Other chapters (besides HQ and Catskills) should look into running and promoting these if they haven't already.

I agree! It's because generationally we are getting old, and we keep hanging on to our fun even after the kids are born. We have photos of Mason fencing our cat at 18 months and sleeping with a sword phys rep. He and his little sister have been playing with foam weapons for years now. They know that Mommy and Daddy go play their "game" (which is what we call it at our house with the kids.) Try telling a kid to wait 10 minutes for something much less 10 years!! Thank goodness he can come to HQ this year. We just have to figure out how to make sure Sadie doesn't freak over not being able to play until next year!

In regards to what I call it, I confess - it's still NERO to me. It's what how I was introduced to it, so that's how it sticks. (I do this with first names too - if I meet you as Christopher, you will be Christopher to me - not Chris, or anything else...) We do tend to refer to specific events as HQ or NJ, tho'.
