Poor Amber...

So, I was looking around for any sort of crossmentions of the new Paul Rudd flick Role Models and Monster Camp, and I came across this review of Monster Camp.

So the story has a happy ending; what touched me most was the afterword, when one of the socially crippled young women says she finally is going out, with friends she met here, to do something as mundane as bowling. That was a huge accomplishment for her, and if you imagine how sheltered your life must be to be so excited about bowling with a few friends, you can feel a glimpse of the loneliness in these people's lives. <snip> When the one girl escapes the obsession and makes that one small step for man, but a giant step for nerd-kind- in going out with friends to go bowling- it's hard not to crack a smile, and hope that she won't be that crazy lady upstairs who dies alone with 40 cats feasting on her corpse someday.

Someone, QUICK, get Amber and take her bowling!!!

merrrr.
i dont like reading monster camp reviews.

they kinda suck.
lol.

but its true. everyone who has never experienced a larp doesn't really have anything good to say about it. >P

Well, the problem I have with that "review" is that it's just some guy being a jerk. Someone who's really reviewing monstercamp would be reviewing the documentary and those who shot it, not the people who were in it. Criticizing someone who very likely volunteered their time to help produce the content the way that "reviewer" did isn't reviewing the movie... it's just being a mean-spirited *insert choice expletive here*.

word. agreed. \(^_^)/(^-^)\(^_^)/

As a general rule, I'd say that how one reviews or critiques any bit of media, be it the movie or the review of the movie, is reflective of what prejudices and expectations that person brought into it with them.

The review itself was interesting and entertaining to me because it demonstrates that any time you take single snippets of someone's life and create, in your mind, an entire universe where that is the sole truth of their existence. Case and point, those of us who (at least think) we know Amber viewed her comment to be more of a one-off about how playing Alliance has expanded on what she enjoys doing in life from solitary pursuits to social ones. The reviewer, OTOH, is presented with the comment as largely his/her only insight into who Amber is and was, and therefore is left to his/her own experiences to fill in the blanks.
(Mind you, you're reading the words of someone who has "completely written off reality", so take from it what you will.) The people in the movie, as much as they bear a striking resemblance to the people you know and love/hate, are not the real people (and in truth, they can't be). They are a single facet given highlight, and the interpretation is ultimately the responsibility of the audience.

To paraphrase a story by Kevin Smith, if you're digging the Banky character and think he's right-on, and then he turns out to be gay, and you feel conflicted about that, it's probably because you have issues with your own sexuality.

Now, to the more important question... when's the last time you guys took her bowling? :)
