Greetings,

Our recent survey showed that more than HALF of our respondents were brought to Alliance LARP through word of mouth marketing. I will be posting discussion threads every Tuesday for the foreseeable future that will allow us to talk amongst ourselves and share ideas/thoughts on how to best spread the word about our great game!

This week I'd like to start things off in a simple way and talk about our elevator pitch. The definition of an elevator pitch (from Wikipedia) is as follows:

An elevator pitch or elevator speech is an overview of a product, service, person, group or organization, or project and is often a part of a fundraising, marketing communications, brand, or public relations program.

The name "elevator pitch" reflects the idea that it should be possible to deliver an elevator pitch in the time span of an elevator ride, or approximately thirty seconds to two minutes

So, lets all suspend disbelief and assume that we are in an elevator with a potential recruit. What do you say to them?

I can't wait to see some of the ideas you folks have. The best resource the Publicity team has is you.

Regards,

Stephen

When giving someone that quick snapshot of the game I usually like to say something like:

It's a game, that's a lot like a murder mystery meets Lord of the Rings. There's a staff who develops a story line in a fantasy setting and about 45-70 of us all get together at a camp ground in clothing like you would see at a Renaissance fair and we become the heroes of that story line. Half of us know what's going to happen and they play the part of the bad guys and the other half plays the heroes who don't know what's going to happen and try to beat the bad guys by solving puzzles and fighting monsters. It's like make believe but with rules and structure.

LARP is like tabletop roleplaying except you actually do and say what your character does and says. So instead of saying you stay alert, you actually go for a walk while looking all around you, listening for bad guys, etc. Instead of rolling dice you swing your fake sword, block with your shield, dive out of the way, etc. Instead of saying I make a speech using my high charisma you actually make your speech.

Hey you ever been a villain or a hero for a weekend...I have. I play The Alliance, Formerly NERO which is a LARP. I have fun all weekend long hanging out with my boys. If you are interested you should check it out @ alliancelarp.com, this is my floor.

Re: Publicity Thread of the week! "What's Your Elevator Pitc

Here is the formula to make a LARP:
Take 1 part medieval recreation or renaissance fair.
Take 1 part Tolkien esq fantasy world.
Combine those ideas with the real world action of paintball but with safe foam swords.
Mix in a little improvisational acting and you've got yourself a tasty Alliance LARP cocktail.

Alliance is a fantasy live action role playing (LARP) game that is usually played out of the course of a weekend. It is amazing exercise and a lot of fun for groups of friends. It is a great way to meet new people and unwind from the pressures of everyday life. Fights are played out in a safe manner with foam padded weaponry and small bean bags called packets. (Hands them an Alliance SEA business card) Okay, promise you will come try it out and I will stop hitting the door close button.

*Walks into elevator wearing LARP costume and holding a shield and sword* (Did this a lot in college...)

Alliance LARP a full-immersion, semi-improvisational role playing game that uses high fantasy adventure-based plot along with real-time, boffer-style (PVC pipe or latex) "combat". Basically, players are divided into two groups for the weekend: Player Characters (PCs), who have no knowledge of coming events and play the same character all weekend, and Non-Player Characters (NPCs), who know what is going to happen and play all monsters, townspeople, and anything else that the Plot Team may need them to play, often and frequently changing roles.

The NPCs set-up situations to "hook" the PCs into ("Help!" The local merchant's son is trapped in a cave full of big, nasty spiders!"), but PCs have free will to act (or not act) however they will to the given set-up. PCs can also go to the plot team with plot requests during the game ("I'd like to go to the Celestial Magic Guild to see if this nifty looking necklace I found in the spider cave has any magical properties."). This process is continuously repeated throughout the weekend with several plot lines happening simultaneously. Due to the large amount of players involved, the players often split up into different "adventuring parties" which further creates plot through PC-to-PC interactions of all types. There is also a complete published rule book and system to maintain a fair and fun game for all! More info can be found at http://www.alliancelarp.com!

This is awesome stuff guys! Keep it coming!

I especially like OrcFighter's concise definition of PC vs NPC. I was very very good at explaining it to people. Thank you!

What else ya got? (A new thread starts tomorrow!)

I keep the video from G4 Underground on my phone and iPad, always ready to show it. I can talk all day, but that video has gotten more people interested in checking out the site than anything else I've seen (except for photos of Ohio's dracolich... that thing is amazing!). I wish we could get the rights to put that video right on the front of our website... that would be amazing.
