Seattle 2009 Schedule

Because I can't edit I must make a second post... grrrr...

Matt, can you clarify what you mean by composite? When I think composite I am generally thinking of a carbon fiber rod or some similar material, but I know some people think of composite as just using multiple materials of different types (i.e. fiber glass tube with a stiffener material inside of it).

"Composite" is an overloaded word. That's why I asked earlier in this thread:

Can you be a bit more specific on the particular weapon construction details? I'm not sure what you mean by "composite core".

Dreamingfurther, we really need a detailed response on what you consider a "composite core".

Yea that's cool. I can provide a detailed explanation and pictures if necessary.

By composite core, for a bow I mean bent pieces of pvc for the places in which the bow is curved in shape, and kitespar pieces epoxied in between the pieces of pvc where the bow is strait. It adds rigidity and strength to the overall core to cut out the strait pvc parts of the bow and epoxy in kitespar there. Incidentally I have play tested this to the point it breaks, and the only part where it broke was the pvc part, and it was a very clean break. The the places where it is epoxied is ultimately stronger than either pvc or kitespar individually.

I could bring pieces of kitespar and pvc as well epoxied and not epoxied together to be looked at and tested seperately too if that would matter. It just makes the bow ultra-light, which can be nice for something you pretty much carry around all day. Ultimately its your call so I'll do something else if this is not cool.

Thanks for the consideration. :)

Sorry Bryan, David and I knew what we were talking about, and left you out of the loop. :P
When he said "Composite cores" I thought exactly what he described (for a bow), as opposed to "Carbon Composite core" which may be what you thought (which is like kitespar, and is what many golf clubs that we use are made of). So, actually, since the UL parts of the bow are alternate materials, it would be conceivable to have a Composite Core with composite core. ;)
Basically, my problem with the weapon is that it's not one piece, or even two. In most cases it's between 3 and 5 separate pieces, glued together.

I understand. But incidentally if I got the hard numbers on the breaking strength of the epoxy I use, as compared to pvc and the kitespar, and brought some example pieces of the core to be tested outside of the weapon is there any chance this could be accepted? I'm sure you've used epoxy and the stuff bonds strong. It might as well be once piece by now.

On the other hand I fully respect your weapon codes and if this is just a solid no then I"ll just drop it. For what its worth it has been passed in other chapters, and I don't know if this has any bearing, but it is just a bow. :)

Personally, I would vote to allow it pending an inspection. Since it is a bow it is not going to be striking anyone and most epoxy is extremely durable. As long as it passes the general safety requirements I would say it should at least be looked at.

But, I am not a marshal. :D

Good morning,

We chatted the issue over and we'll go ahead and let your bow in on a trial basis. We will probably continue to disallow multi-part core weapons on striking weapons, but we'll try it out with bows for a while (since they generally undergo significantly less contact, and aren't meant for striking opponents) and see how it goes.

Cool! I'll bring along example pieces of the core if you'd like, and a spare pvc bow in case there are issues. But the ultra light is a lot lighter and nicer for me to use.

Thanks so much! :)

I'll be pre-reg'ing soon. I'm excited to see Seattle for the first time in person!
