Setting acurate music?

I love to sing and play music, and i would like to carry that over to the game! However, I'm not quite sure what kind of music would be acceptable in the setting. Should I dig deep to find renaissance and medieval era songs, or is just basic 'fantasy' music fine. As for instruments, would i need a period accurate one (Citterns, Gitoles, ect.) or would a ukelele or small banjo fit the bill?

I've definitely seem acoustic guitar played fireside at one event, and someone at the Stormbreak campaign brought a sitar, so I think there's a little wiggle room.

Ukelele and Banjo might pull people out of the element because of what they are mostly associated with but basic instruments like acoustic guitar would pass muster.
