On behalf of the court of Rivervale, I wish to thank all of those who risked their lives on the journey to Death's Isles, braving cannibal attacks, withstanding dinosaur packs, and facing down the spirits of despair within the lava tubes on the Isle of Light. Although danger surrounded us at every turn, you brave defenders faced each threat head-on without falter.

For those who may not be aware, the Duchy of Acarthia has been struggling with an inky blackness infecting our resurrections for almost two years now. They have become progressively more difficult to complete, to the point where some spirits have been ripped away, sundered forever by this sentient, malign force. In recent months, we have also seen creatures of terror and despair emerging from those who have resurrected, sowing chaos and despair in the night.

During our travails in the depths of Death's Isles, we learned that this occurred because a being of darkness and despair, one that claimed to have existed on Fortannis long before the mortal races came to be, had imprisoned some of his emotional counterparts, creatures of light, laughter, and love. With their confinement, the balance between joy and sorrow was upset, leading us to our predicaments.

I recognize that the battle against the spirits of darkness was chaotic, and wished to shed some light on what occurred to inform all. Some time ago, we found an artifact called the Key of Shadows. When the battle began, Baron Egil Nordheim of Bayenna realized that the Key would need to be activated in order to restore the balance. He gathered together a small group of individuals: Lucian and Blue of the court of Tiatar, Squire Klonoah Kona and Treasurer Banks of the court of Rivervale, bringing them into the depths of the cave. While Lucian and Blue expressed their love, Banks was administered a laughing poison, and Squire Kona channeled the powers of life magic to activate the Key. Over a period of several minutes, they focused these forces upon the key, despite increasing pain and discomfort, as the spirits of joy were progressively freed.

Finally, with a surge of power, the final spirit was freed, and a hush settled over the cavern as the spirit of despair was defeated by the combined efforts of commoner and noble alike. Although we have not yet been able to test the effects, we hope that this means our resurrections will be peril-free henceforth.

In gratitude for the risks undertaken by the many stalwart individuals who joined us, the baronial court of Rivervale will be opening its spellbooks to all who wish to memorize from them during the gathering of the courts in August 415. Whether celestial or earth, our spellbooks will be available to any citizens who need them.
