Sunken Salvage Operation

Gandian Ravenscroft

Knight
Chicago Staff
Marshal
Adventurers of Atupal,

Let me sing you a song recently added to the records of the Pale Navy, to be sung from the decks forevermore in commemoration of the brave sailors whose mettle and bravery were enough to overcome a grisly fate:

The sky was gray and cloudy and the wind was from the east
We were sailing our fine frigate when upon us came the beast
The captain watched through spy-glass and we heard him catch his breath
As we saw the storm a-brewing had become the mouth of death

The creature roared like thunder and the lightning stabbed the waves
And the evil thing moved towards us, swimming fury for our graves
Our captain, he stayed at the wheel; the crew, they manned the lines
And still the beast and the storm were quickly closing in behind

Turn this ship around, me crew! Turn around and run!
The storm here wants a battle and it's sure that we’re outgunned!
“What of the thing that's out there? What’s that swimming in the gales?”
IT’S CALLED THE INKANYAMBA AND WE NEED TO FILL OUR SAILS!

Our ship crest a giant wave produced by the thing below
The crew held on to what they could, they were doomed if they let go
The rain and sea and storm winds thrashed against our ship with wrath
And from the maw of the cursed beast, we all could hear it laugh

That was when we sighted land, it became a race with time
It did not matter where it was, death was closing in behind
"Risk it all" the captain howled, "It's the only chance we got"
Survival if we make it, or all our lives if we get caught

Turn this ship around, me crew! Turn around and run!
The storm here wants a battle and it's sure that we’re outgunned!
“What of the thing that's out there? What’s that swimming in the gales?”
IT’S CALLED THE INKANYAMBA AND WE NEED TO FILL OUR SAILS!

The storm was all around us and the monster sought our end
The beast nearly capsized us and we all watched our strong mast bend
We were almost to the harbor, we could see the shore’s break
And the crew all willed her forward, for we knew what was at stake

Once we charged into that harbor, the monster heaved away
And we heard its bitter screaming, for the beast had lost its prey
If you see a horrid thing ‘neath a gray and stormy sky
Give way and sail afar then or else you'll hear your captain cry:

Turn this ship around, me crew! Turn around and run!
The storm here wants a battle and it's sure that we’re outgunned!
“What of the thing that's out there? What’s that swimming in the gales?”
IT’S CALLED THE INKANYAMBA AND WE NEED TO FILL OUR SAILS!

While the crew of this vessel may have been fortunate in their encounter and lived to tell their tale, many other ships have not fared so well when they came face-to-face with the Inkanyamba - that is to say, the fish portion of the monstrous duo that comprises the evil Ris’sunus. The Pale Navy has suffered numerous losses, both in vessels and crew, to both the strength of Ris’sunus’ fierce storms and the vicious teeth of the monster itself.

Despite this, it is nonetheless our sworn duty to protect the people of Gavaria from the threats of the sea, and we will not back down. While the sinking of our ships has been unfortunate for many reasons, we have found a way that these losses may yet prove useful going forward.

During a salvage recovery operation at the site of one of the Pale Navy’s recently sunken ships, one of our divers discovered shed scales from the Inkanyamba scattered across the seafloor in the area, still glowing with Ris’sunus’ magical light. We hypothesize that if some of these scales can be collected, we may be able to identify or otherwise investigate them to learn more about Ris’sunus’ specific abilities and, hopefully, vulnerabilities.

Assuming this is of interest and something that a team of adventurers would be willing and able to assist with, I will plan to venture to Atupal again when next your group convenes, and we will begin the expedition from there.

May the wind be at your quarter and your sails flying free,
- Captain Orion Reize, of the Pale Navy
