I think that much of the curfluffle about "team-oriented play vs independent play" is a strawman. In the majority, groups simply are more survivable than individuals. There seems to be a perception that some methods of play would suddenly alter this dynamic (magic items, classless systems, etc.). I would suggest that this is due to limited imagination in plot writing. Even the guy with five of every skill in the book can't be everywhere at once. Just write a plotline that requires two or more people doing something at the same time, and poof, you've encouraged teamplay.
