The Alliance historical timeframe

Dragonlance is an alternate game setting, up until current edition Greyhawk was the "official" D&D campaign world. Now it's Eberron, it's steampunk and (in my admittedly biased opinion) terrible. Nit picks aside JP, you know exactly what she was saying and seem to have hit "submit" before you finished your point. :P

Nope, but having been part of the rules system for so long some grandfathering would be needed.

Explosive bombs (land mines, even!) were certainly done as early as the 13th Century, so they do fit. Of course, the "boom" in the Alliance LARP traps isn't gunpowder, but some wacky highly unstable substance.

Historically, the earliest canons were in use as far back as 1288 AD in some parts of the world. Frankly, I consider it a stretch to try to hang a specific period on the game. The rulebook doesn't define or enforce any given culture or specific history on the chapters beyond the laws on necromancy, after all.

See, it's my experiments in brevity and reduced repetition that get me in trouble. :) (And personally? Hated Greyhawk... friggin' powergamers. ;) Also, I always thought Forgotten Realms was the default world... shows how out of the loop I am. )

But okay, expanding on the point, clearly there is room even in the DnD overall arching mythos that allows for gearheads and the like in one form or another. The gnomes don't detract from the world of Krynn, they're just another part of the tapestry. By the same token, an undercarriage clip for a crossbow in the world of Alliance doesn't bother me much either. Clearly there's a wide swath of gray between Arthurian legends and Star Trek, but I don't know that all elements of steampunk need to be quashed.

If there needs to be a less-gray line on what is and isn't within the scope of local plot teams to limit the look and feel of their games in order to ensure that character concepts conform to some Alliance-wide plot standard, I'd be curious to see how that would be implemented. (Heck, why can't humans be gearknobs? Their race packet seems to support it. )
