The publicity committee wants your photos!

In order to generate stock photos for a number of advertising initiatives, we at the Publicity committee would love to have your photos of game events in a number of category.

As a start we are looking for photos showing some of the below things.

1.) The game - DUH, action shots people, these should have no anachronisms if at all possible.
2.) Logistics set up - Got a shot from standing around in logistics, filling out forms etc?
3.) Well decorated locales - Have a sexy tavern locally, or are your that guy(or gal) that brings 3 plastic totes to decorate your room with?
4.) Costuming, costuming, Both full costume and up close shots of racial setups.

Interested? Great! Send that information to the below account it's free, secure, and as fast as we can make it!

In order to better share photos from events and the like we've set up an ftp repository to accept all those photos you want to share, this allows you to share higher quality imagines, and move a large number at once to our web hosting guru!

FTP site - FTP://www.mnalliance.com
User - uploadmn
Password - Photos2012!

Photos uploaded will not be immediately available as they have to be reviewed etc. Please do not knowingly upload photos of anyone who prefers not to be photographed.

If you need an ftp client try - www.filezilla.com

Bump, 126 views, one upload, is there something that's stopping folks from using this repository?

I'll take a bunch of "getting into costuming" at the next SoMN and upload them.

Using a FTP client, I would suspect. There are other methods, like a public photobucket account that don't involve people having to download something onto their computers.

Pretty much nobody should need to download something, you just need to know how to use command-line FTP that's built into ... every OS since 1995?

Or the inbuilt graphical ftp client in every IE version since about 2001?

< sarcasm > because making it easier for people to participate is a bad idea! those nerds don't know how to FTP? screw them, we don't need their photos! </ sarcasm >

browser ftp stopped accurately working years ago when security settings changed to add extra steps to the process. Windows explorer still works the way it should, but that's about it. command line ftp? really? you think a windows 7 user does anything by command line?

not that I have anything to do with your chapter or this project, but from an outside perspective, yeah... find an easier way for people to get the photos to you. this is the age of instant gratification. we have facebook, wordpress, instagram, flickr, and so on... all with auto-uploaders.

good luck getting people to take extra steps for any reason.

sorry, but what little program I knew was DOS based from the 80s and that little bit was more than forgotten.

I can link to the various facebook and photobucket stuff I have, but it's not much.

Hey, I've got no objection to making it easier. My comment was specifically about the need to download something to get FTP working - I find it highly unlikely that anyone using these boards would be absolutely unable to upload using FTP - with a link in the first post, no less - without downloading something first. The suggested FTP client from that first post could be useful, but it's not required. Thus my earlier comment, nothing more, nothing less. No need to take it out of context or extend it into something it wasn't :)

Get with the times, guys. Imgur does drag-and-drop uploading and album creation, and an email with imgur links is all of a right-click-save away from being on your desktop.

That said, you don't have my photo backlog because I'm too busy fighting to take pictures. :)

Gather up a bunch of photos and send them my way, I will FTP em to Dave. In the end it doesn't matter how you get them to Dave, just get them. We basically want a "Picture pac" for various chapters to use and what better way to show off your character then submitting your photos.

Ultimately I decided not to go with a photo sharing website for a number of reasons. I don't want to deal with differences in formatting that this might cause, I'd rather have the pictures in their rawr, and even better, high density formats. Ease is great, the ability to print an amazing 2 billion megapixel photo on a glossy cover at Nerd-a-nomicon is even better. Second once properly set up and understood you can upload a LARGE quantity quickly over ftp, while most public hosting sites have much of this too, it tends to wilt under large enough loads and often without giving you a good idea what made it. Third, ftp allows for easier video uploads which can be dissected for stills etc.

Finally, I'm a big fan of 1982 and love the idea of removing potential R-rated shots, anachronistic shots etc. before the photos are made auto public by anyone clicking next. (although I'm sure I can do that on a web interface.

- David

PS - I'm also an old fuddy-duddy, and by gone it, FTP was good enough for my generation, you whipper-snappers!

Is 1982 like 1984? :P

</snarky>

P.S. I may just be missing some other pop culture reference here, in which case, my bad, carry on.

Can I get you email, that would be easiest for me to send them to you.

I'm pretty tech savvy, been using computers since 1994 when I was 14, and I *would* be unable to upload using FTP without downloading something first.

I can view the directory, but there's no 'upload' in my web browser. At the bare minimum I would have to download a client (that I *might* happen to use once and then forget I ever download) - if it even occurred to me to use a command line prompt I would still have to google what the command is (which requires me to download a webpage)

So in short, it is not only highly likely, but probable! (I think I *might* have CuteFTP on my HD somewhere from the last time I needed to FTP something... but I may have deleted it the last time I went through and cleaned out my HD...)

If you are asking others to do you a favour, you shouldn't make them jump through hoops to comply - it'll fall under 'why bother?'

That said, I like having my photo taken ^-^. When I get my costume done I'd be happy to send it to you.

Now we are just being silly. If you are uploading to an image site, you are 'downloading' their interface, and finding the right account etc. will take you just as much time as cut and pasting a few lines that are provided for you.

Look folks, we are a volunteer game, and trust me we very much appreciate the help, as an Owner I especially see just how much work goes into things. However even volunteers should be able to be expected to handle a minimal amount of effort, if i go to help out at a soup kitchen, i don't expect a machine to pour the soup into bowls for me, when I volunteer with the boy scouts I expect to do a significant amount of physical labor.

I get that some people will disagree with the method I've chosen, but I've got reasons for chosing it and we'll be happy and grateful for whatever we get. Remember one of the prime advantages of FTP is that if you use a decent client, you only have to set it up once, and you can move large amounts easily. To be honest I expect the majority of the pictures to come from a small number of volunteers with a larger stash of photos, most chapters have 'that guy' (or girl) who whips out a camera and snaps stills more often and it's those folks I'm after.

(EDIT: Rereadidng - I unfortunately conflated what polare wrote with what Lurin wrote - so I made some changes to what I wrote after I posted it - just in in case anyone had previously read them before I edited- I was conflating some things.)

Without the required learning curve. If I were to need to learn to use the console to FTP something as oppose to 'click 'upload' & find picture on HD' that's considerably more effort.

*I personally* don't mind downloading an FTP client to upload stuff for you if I had any (and when my costume is finished I'd love to send you a photo - a lot of the staff at the stores I've been asking about stuff are curious to see a picture of it too!)

That said, I totally see where previous posters are coming from, and the hypothetical from polare about 'highly doubting' that anyone reading these forms would find it impossible to upload with ftp without downloading anything did not make sense to me. It might not be impossible, but it is on the onerous side for most readers (even ones who are highly internet savvy like myself - the most I've ever used the console for is to release/renew my IP address, and to occasionally open software that you can't access from the Hard Drive such as the registry).

will take you just as much time as cut and pasting a few lines that are provided for you.

If you had provided the windows command prompt FTP command right after the client link, I wouldn't be debating this :P

Also, if you are targeting the 'one guy or girl in every chapter' you are essentially targetting 10-20 people out of the whole community, which makes your 2nd post (126 views and only one upload?) a bit impatient. Also you DID ask in that post 'Is there something stopping people from using this repository?' (- and yet seemed to get upset when you received an answer.

No one has previously volunteered to send you pictures - you are asking them to. That would be like asking someone to volunteer in a soup kitchen, but they must bring their own ladles, pots and materials - and no training is provided so you're on your own if you have no soup kitchen experience. (But I'm mixing examples)

Is 1982 like 1984?
Dunno what you mean here, but the quote made me think of the song 1985. "She's too preocupied, on 1985" and much applicable I think ;)

And we have more to add! This was only our first event. Don't worry David, I have Filezilla so uploading them will not be an issue, I just need to snag the originals from a couple of players then up they go!
