Only one purple light sabre was shown in the movies, the one used by Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson). Supposedly the crystal needed to produce that color blade resonates very close the the energies of the Dark Side, and that has meaning for that character. He was the one who was willing to kill Palpatine in order to stop him. He was pushed to that mental state by using a light sabre with that crystal in it. Over time it subtly affected his mind.

That was the storyline explanation...

The real life reason for Mace having a purple saber was that SLJ had it written into his contract that he'd get a unique saber and he'd get a very cool, on-screen death.

I hadn't heard that story.

It was also widely rumored that someone at one point secretly engraved BAMF on the bottom of the hilt, but it's been both confirmed and denied a couple of times.

Also, there's a book out written by my wife's cousin called Shatterpoint that gets all into Mace Windu's history and background and tells you the 'real' reasons why he walks so close between the light and the dark. It's a pretty good read.

Which was the reason written in to explain that Mr. Jackson wanted a purple lightsaber, because it was that awesome. He wanted something that would stand out in the big fight scenes and would make the character unique. (Multiple interviews around 2005, most notably the one on David Letterman) :ugeek:
