Throwing Weapon Physreps

The next build expense for my character is likely to be throwing weapons (I was thinking archery, but that doesn't feel right for the character) and I just can't quite figure out what the rules for throwing weapons are. I see throwing daggers on the weapon list, and I see that throwing weapons are supposed to be made out of open cell foam. What I don't see are guidelines for how to build the physreps to be safe, rules for how to throw them and call damage, anything about collecting them during a hold (which I would imagine you can't do), anything about reusing them (I would imagine that is the intention), or restrictions upon the types allowed.

So, having said all of that, what do I need to know about throwing weapons to be able to build their physreps and use them in game?

-Make them out of open cell foam
-Make sure they don't have any real edges/pointy bits to them
-Although the rules state otherwise, try to keep it so that nothing is less than 1" in diameter

Now, with that said, check with your local weapons marshall as to what would be allowable. I have made some throwing weapons in the past that don't exactly meet the required designs but still work really well. My favorite of course, that DOES adhere to the dimensions are my throwing barrels.

The damage for a tagged thrown weapon (i.e. not a rock) is base 2 + 1 for each weapon prof +1 for each backstab. They can be coated, used with an endow, and used with a crit attack or back attack. They can also be the subject of a damage aura.

They cannot be collected during a hold, but are reusable.

As far as types... there is no real restriction. Anything from barrels to throwing stars to whatever those crazy xena frisbees are really called.

As long as it is safe.

I usually build mine dagger style by laying out a sheet of open cell foam of a width appropriate the the length I want on the weapon and then rolling it until the diameter is what I want to end up with.

There are some tricks to it, but that is the gist of it.

Duct tape is the most common, though I have seen some cloth.

It does need some kind of outside... duct tape, cloth or somethign else

The hardest thing for me, when making thrown weapons when I first started was to not make them like regular weapons. Don't make them UL lol. Like Justin and others have said made from ONLY open cell foam for thrown weapons (an exception is the javelin made from old foam from a weapon with the thrusting tip but no core).

Mine are weighted with duct tape :-)

One thing I've heard you can do to add weight, is tape a layer or duct tape to 1" open cell foam before your roll it into a dagger shape so that it flies decently well. So basically you coat the top of the open cell foam that you roll up like frosting on a cake with duct tape. :D

Use 1/2" open cell.

Put the duct tape on what will be the inside of the weapon.

Don't put tape on what will be the last inch of the ends of the weapon or it will not be smooshy enough to pass in some places.

Would it be helpful if I chucked a few of these things at people as hard as I can before trying to get them passed? Any volunteers?

If duct tape, open-cell foam, and cloth are all I have to work with, that should be fine. I'll come up with something good. How well does open-cell foam take spray paint?

You are better off using spray latex than spray paint.

Or spray plasti-dip if you can get your hands on it. It seems to be getting harder and harder to find.

that's crazy... what colors?

And what sites?

Not well. The solvents in most spray paints will dissolve many types of open-cell, depending on the chemistry. If you have to spray them, cloth them over first, and spray the cover.

I thought it was open cell foam and tape only.

We don't allow latex weapons but some how you are going to add them to something that you are going to throw at some one? Doesn't seem to make sense to me...

I can huck a semi-solid mass of birdseed at your head but I can't use closed cell pipe foam with no core in my throwing knife? Same level of WTF I'd say.

The construciton on latex weapons and latex covered thrown weapons is significantly different.
