Trained animals?

I was reading the trained animal section in the rule book. I understand that the horses will help you travel faster but what do the other animals do for you. I assume they are just for flavor between events but if I am wrong please let me know.

A trained howlbear will almost certainly go berserk roughly half an hour after you spend 5 gold pieces on it.

Trained birds can deliver messages. Other animals can contribute in other ways depending on what your plot team allows. There is a player in NH who got a set of hunting dogs as a gift from an NPC he had helped, and the dogs can help him "track" at times.

I got the tracking thing covered. I took that as a Craftsman skill. But I was thinking about a horse.
