Vigilence Over Undead and Cursed

Traceroo

Rogue
The Vigilant wants to protect you from the undead, which can be more numerous and more active at this time of year.

In the month of October, veils between the worlds grow thinner. This empowers undead, emboldens them. They rise with ease, and sometimes display unusual characteristics of strength. You should be aware of the following:

Wards and Jack-o-lanterns
While the veils are thin as they are now, Ward and Wizard Lock spells will not stop the progress of the undead. Undead can walk right through as if there’s no magical barrier there at all. You’ll still want a Ward against people and goblins, and things.

Undead are stopped by the light from within a carved jack-o-lantern. The jack-o-lantern must be carved from a pumpkin that is just right for the task. It must be carved in a design, or a face. It must have a light shining within. Some folks may casually talk about “pumpkins” on your doorstep, but take it from The Vigilant - it’s only carved jack-o-lanterns that do the trick.

This talisman must be placed outside your door for it to repel the undead. If it’s inside, it doesn’t seem to work. If it’s inside a Ward, it doesn’t seem to work. Now the trouble here is that leaves your jack-o-lantern vulnerable to people and goblins and whatnot -- so remain ever vigilant.

[OOG: Your jack-o-lantern must be made from a tagged pumpkin, and the tag must be attached to the jack-o-lantern. The physrep can be a fake pumpkin, or a real one, so long as it looks like a jack-o-lantern, and is in genre.]

Undead vs. Cursed
Not everything that rises from the grave is traditional undead. Some are cursed beings which rise naturally instead of by necromancy - a ghost with unfinished business is a typical cursed being. Cursed can include some ghosts, banshees, revenants, and variants on the same. Sometimes these creatures are known by different names throughout the lands.

Cursed don’t respond like undead do. They’re affected by Wards but not by jack-o-lanterns.Healing spells may not harm all cursed beings like you’d want, even ritual magic may perform differently, or not at all, be aware. Some require very specific means to bring them the peace of the grave. They’re all different.

Power of the Season
At this time of year, undead and cursed can display some unusual traits. Even some lesser undead have been known to spontaneously develop intelligence. Zombies might talk. Sometimes incorporeal undead can go out in the daylight in October, when normally they cannot.

One thing is sure: Both the undead and the cursed rise more easily this time of year, all across the lands, not just in places with a great deal of death and adventure like New Acarthia. You will see more undead, and more powerful, perhaps more intelligent undead. Be vigilant. Be careful.

[OOG: 2018 Update: You DO NOT need a tag for your pumpkin. The physrep of a jack-o-lantern with a light within it is enough. The physrep can be a fake pumpkin, or a real one, so long as it looks like a jack-o-lantern, and is in genre. It must be lighted from within to achieve the IG effect of warding away undead.]
