It might depend on the web host but is usually pretty standard. You log into your control panel (usually cpanel but a few hosts use other ones) and click on webstats - usually they have both Webalizer and AWstats and a few others I never bother with. Then you can chcek overall traffic as well as referrals. referrals show you where the traffic came from. When looking at search engine referrals you can see the search terms people used to find your site.

All webamasters should pay attention to this. For example one time I was checking out my logs and I noticed a lot of people were finding my site by searching for "speaking activities". I had never gone after this search term before and was on page 2 of the results. I figured if I'm getting 100 people a month while on page 2 I might as well go for page 1 and get more traffic. I think now I am actually the #1 result.

I never would have thought about that search term if I hadn't been checking out my search engine referrals.
