Magic vs. Alchemy

I wanted to put this up on the tavern wall before heading back home with Rothsphere. Frankly I heard NUMEROUS questions this past gather and heard even more comments. I wanted to clear up a few things and pose a few questions. I do not want this to turn into some stack of scrawled offenses to either side of this party. I would like people to clearly state their opinions without concern that someone else is going to call them an idiot.

Having said that....
1. I am NOT Sadeen Moorian. I was born in a vardo roaming around the queen's continent.
2. I am NOT human, still Rom last I checked.
3. I was asked by a couple of people "Do you want a life spell if you're dead?" "Do you want magical healing if you're down?" I told you I did not. I realize that this may or may not sound "right" or "correct" to you. I still fear for my life at times and "hide" in a circle of power. I also keep things inside of wards that I want to remain safe. I am trying to live my life without magic. It is EXTREMELY difficult. My family (both blood and adopted) know that I am not going to be angry with them if they use magic on me to heal me. I will not be mad at anyone for saving my life with magic.
I hope that clears a few things up.

Magic vs. Alchemy
I heard a comment this weekend that caused me to pause and consider its meaning. I was commenting on a type of protection circle that should be developed that is made from alchemy perhaps an acid that other creatures could not pass through to get to me. The comment that was made to me was "you realize all that alchemy is just magic" (this is paraphrased I may not have it exactly right.) This caused me to ponder. I was once told by Mistress Keely that earth magic must only ever be used to heal, never for necromancy and then she told me that the earth gives its power to the caster and this power flows through the caster to heal living creatures or destroy undead. Her final words were "Never never never never never use it for necromancy!" This was a good lesson. But let me put it to you this way.
What if the earth does send this very same power in the form of trees, roots, plants, minerals, etc. that can be collected and modified, mixed together to form alchemy that does the same thing? Why would this cause people so much offense?
I feel the offense in people's words from time to time. But honestly...if you dislike Sadeen Moorians simply because they are more learned than you of how to use the earth's resources, I would say take another look.
Perhaps it was their "leader" that you did not like. Perhaps it was their government you disliked. All this has changed.
It cannot be their advancements of alchemy that you dislike because if you are fine with magic, and you say that their alchemy is magic...why do you care that people use it?

Honestly looking to see people respond. Please leave responses here and I will be traveling back to the Hollow at least once every month to meet with familia. I am most anxious to read what you have to say.

my dear Tzydl
I am looking forward to your visit and our many discussions and would be interested in hearing others responses to the question you put before us.
I have heard such things said about my magic yet when fire is needed I hear my name called and asked to use it...problem with this nothing as I can see
some times when one does not work the other does...to be school in it all is not a bad thing...to understand it all better.....to know what will work when and be able to do it or to stand aside so someone else can also a good thing......we will discuss more when you arrive

(on a parchment with ink dots splattered and mug rings of ale all over)

In mE honesst opinion aLl peeple use ThE allchemy Stoof at its bAsiC. Mixing PlaNts an herbs and An Stuff togeether to get a desired effeect or feelin. In this basic coNcePt aint that not what brewing and cook is? we can cause a desired eeffeCt by how we mix herbs en stUff in food or how eets prepared and the Zame with brewing a good strong ale cun lift the spIRits of every one round drinking or not for they CuN see those having a good time enjoying their Brew and food this is the main concept of a TaVern. When SeEn at this way some people are better at it then others but no one goes to war with because some one cooks better they just pull up a chair and ask for another round. If the food and ale is bad they avoid it like mee mudders meat loaf

Master Alchemist Tzdl,

Your stances on magic and alchemy are balanced and reasonable, and in many ways embrace the spirit of this new age in which Sadeen Moore finds herself.

Magic is only a shifting of energy in an unnatural and often useful direction. Alchemy is the use of natural chemicals in an unnatural and useful manner. The difference is that alchemy has never torn a continent in half or summoned a monster from another dimension.

This is why alchemical technology is favoured and should be used in all instances where it can replace magic, and this is why the civilized races must continue advancing our technology until one day we no longer require magic for anything. Then we will have truly moved on from a perilous age of darkness and loss into the light of a civilized world.

We Moorians do not wish to endanger our people with the threat magical cataclysms, and while we have accepted that the other nations of Laerthan will continue to use magic, it will continue to be outlawed within our lands.

So long as magic used in other nations does not threaten our own, will not stand against it.

I look forward to meeting you.

Cannot wait to see you. I just dropped by for a moment to see if there were any responses on the wall. I honestly am surprised. Cannot wait to see you on this Saturday and hopefully exchange recipes and hunt for those particular things that are best after the first snow. Hope Ivar is well.

Pure Lord Califus~
I am not sure that we have ever met yet, but I have questions that need answers and perhaps we will be able to speak soon enough.

Ivar~
Rothsphere is anxious to spend time in the forge with you, and I have some elixirs and gasses that I wonder if we can swap?

See you soon,
Tzydl

It would interesting to speak with you also....and rest assured that I will not use magic in your lands as that is your Law and I respect that. Also any knowledge I can further gain in the use of alchemy and the making of it would be greatly appreciated.
Deborah
