National Event 2012

The castle sight might be a bit to small unfortunately. We had about 70 people there and it was cramped for sure. IF a new sight for Monster Camp could be set up there, it would work great as there is a set of bunks in the basement too (that had been used for Monster Camp). The Castle would be a great side otherwise though... Ultimately, while I would love to have it held in SoMN as it would be close, I don't think we have a sight that could fully support it off hand. Just like Chicago, we would have to look for a new site.

Other then that, I have started to write Modules for SoMN and would be more then willing to write up a few smaller things for filler if you were interested.

Bear in mind we all "crammed" into the castle (that still had extra space after the 70 people were piled in) as we did not rent out any of the surrounding buildings at that event.

This is true. Best talk to our chapter owner about this. He would know the most about the site. And I do recall there being a lot more to that boy scout camp than just the castle we all huddled in. (because it was a cold event )

And I would also like to say that LARPing with a functioning castle was AMAZING. :)

The other thing that would be worth considering when looking for a site for national is proximity to an airport. To my memory honestly that castle site, while awesome, was pretty far away from the twin cities and any major airport. (Like 3 hours+)

Since someone mentioned doing it in Ohio... There's a campsite just outside of Cincinnati (Cub World) that has a fort and a small "castle". I don't think the castle is as nice as the one SoMN had (just judging by pictures, I wasn't there), but between the fort, the castle, and some separate cabins, the campsite has enough beds for at least 150 people and tent space on top of that. I've been to several Nero International events at this site (Nero Cincinnati uses it for their summer/fall campaign and they regularly get around 100 people) and it's really nice for larp events.

Thanks for posting that Kyle.

isn't there a system in place for chapters to put in the hat to host, similar to the Olympics? I would have thought that the next location was known before the last one concluded. It seems to me that a home chapter needs at least a year and a half to plan and prepare.

You'd think that. Tried to bring it up at the symposium, but we were so far behind with other stuff that that was never going to happen.

At least. We need that much time to secure a site, let alone plan the game itself. I'm not sure why the planning is put off until only a year before the event.

It's more of a matter of no one picking up the ball and running with it. Had some chapter said "Hey, we'd like to do this" I'm sure everyone would have been willing to listen to a proposal.

So has the Decision been made as to which chapter is hosting yet?

To date, the only chapter that has offered to host is HQ at the Faire Play site.

Cool. Always wanted to visit that site.

When will there be an official "this is the place and time" announcement so we can start planning our trips and reserving our flights?

Will there be a "hosting committee" who can help arrange/coordinate travel? We may be able to leverage our volume to get a discount?

What are the major cities/airports/hotels/stores/spas near Faire Play?

Faire Play is in Montrose, PA, which is about halfway between Syracuse and Allentown. I wouldn't call it rural, but it's not a densely populated area.

It used to be a dairy farm, and it's in a pretty small town. AFAIK, one hotel in town, or tent space once the private rooms, cabins (some of which are privately owned) and bunks fill up. Otherwise it's about a 20-30 minute drive to the next closest hotel.

I thought the WC was next in line for hosting?

We weren't asked far enough in advance. (A very general, but pretty universally true, stance, in so much as I am 'we.')
Seattle would be interested in 2014, but we would need to know sooner rather than later, and 2012 hasn't even been sorted out for sure, AFAIK.

We would love for a chapter on the WC to host.

But that would require a chapter owner on the WC to volunteer.

That has not happened.

Nobody has to be asked anything. At any point a chapter can step up and offer. That is pretty much the only way anything ever gets done in a volunteer organization.

So it's less a matter of 'any of you willing/able to host' and more 'gee, sure hope someone steps in to take on the costs and time commitments so we can have a national event!' then?

Seems less than optimal.

feel free to start a chapter, host the event, and show us all how much better you can do things. i know plenty of people who are waiting with baited breath for the few super users on this board to step up and show us how much better you would do things.

It is this attitude exactly that dissuades people from doing just that. I don't blame anyone for not stepping up to host the National event, it is extremely evident to me why a chapter wouldn't want to do it.
