constitutionally, foreign policy experience means nothing as far as the office of Vice President goes. I would be much happier if we had a VP who just stayed in US, hung out in the senate, and waited to be called upon in a time of need.

It become a bit more important when the President is 73 years old and has been fighting cancer.

I dunno. I mean, the way the media likes to play it out, you'd have to already BE president to be qualified. Isn't that the job of the secritary of state or something? Granted, I don't want "Joe Six-Pack" as president either, but I don't need an expert on the world and everything in it to be president. jsut a good leader who can make desicions that will be int he best interest of the American people.

I look back at men like Lincoln and wonder if we ever know his kind again. He appointed people to his cabinate that hated him. For the sole purpose of wanting another oppinion that could contrdict his so he could make the best decision. Un-freaking-heard of in today's political world.

I'm not defending the McCain/Palin ticket, I'm frankly disgusted by both parties choices.

I am leaning more and more towards voting for Barr just to send a message however small my voice may be.

Well, I agree that experience is not the be-and-end of everything; to me, good judgment, intelligence, honesty, and character are far more important. But I disagree with you that foreign policy experience means "nothing." If I had two candidates who seemed equal on everything else and one had experience in foreign policy, it would help make the difference, don't you think?

And, for the record, Obama wrote about Lincoln's cabinet in one of his books, saying how he thinks that's the best way to govern. He also recently said that if elected, he will probably keep Secretary of Defense Gates. He also chose Joe Biden who has disagreed with him in the past and has done so on the campaign trail even after being chosen. We'll see if Obama keeps this promise when elected, but at least he made the promise, and McCain didn't.

I read an article lately and I agree with it 100%. I want the people I elect to be smarter than me. Preferably, a LOT smarter than me. And, I am not stupid. I want intelligent human beings governing me.

I think McCain, Obama, and Biden are smarter than I am. I don't know how much smarter, but I believe they are smarter. Sadly, I believe Palin is significantly dumber than I am.

You don't have to look too far. Lincoln & GWB both suspended writs of habeas corpus. It's funny that when you start reading history from different viewpoinnts you really get a clearer picture than what public school tries to shove down your throat.

Robb, I know I'll be voting 3rd party. Won't be the first or last time I've done that in a presidential election. Sure beats voting for the lesser of two evils (which is still voting for evil).

And they were both wrong, and both were slapped down by the Supreme Court for doing so. :D

Yup. Which is why when I think of great presidents, people who suspended habeas corpus are near the bottom of my list. I'm sure you of all people would agree with that, Mike. :)

I wouldn't be so quick to damn lincoln for that per se. From what I have read on the matter I don't necessarily disagree with him considering the circumstances.
